In HaloChat, you may receive messages from unknown users because the platform supports a Temporary Session feature. This feature allows non-contacts to initiate short-term conversations without requiring mutual friend requests.
This design supports flexible, anonymous communication while maintaining encrypted messaging security.
If you do not wish to receive messages from strangers, you can adjust your privacy settings:
How to disable stranger messages
On Mobile or Web:
- Go to Settings → Privacy → Conversations
- Turn off “Allow Messages from Everyone”
You can also configure:
- Text message permissions
- Audio and video message permissions
Additionally, you may disable Global Search Visibility.
Once disabled:
- Other users cannot find you through search
- Temporary session access is restricted
- Non-contacts cannot initiate conversations
These privacy controls help you maintain control over who can contact you while preserving secure communication within your trusted network.
